Image-retrieval alternate to Download-Manager

Customer wanting to retrieve a large collection (LIDC-IDRI) asks if there is an alternative to Download-Manager such as a tar-ball or zip file. Currently, we do not offer this and are left suggesting to a customer to download in smaller chunks. Going forward, as more large collections come into play, TCIA needs to consider Download-Manager alternatives, not necessarily limited to what this customer suggests.

TCIA does not have any immediate plans to provide alternatives beyond the API and our Downloader application. However there are multiple "Data analysis centers" at https://wiki.cancerimagingarchive.net/x/x49XAQ which provide other ways to download or work with the data. One of them utilizes BitTorrent as an alternate way to download data. Others are mirroring the data and providing direct analysis capabilities. One major upcoming initiative is the development of NCI Data Commons which will eventually provide cloud-based access to most (or perhaps all?) of TCIA's data such users also have the option to bring their tools to the data rather than downloading it to their local machines.
